Frequently Asked Questions About Domestic Refrigerator Repair:

A technician installed a booster?

I have a GE side-by-side 15 cubic ft refrigerator that I bought used 12 years ago. It just conked out. In an emergency, I called a repairman who said it was the compressor (big surprise!) and he recommended a booster as a short-term solution. I had never heard of a booster, but I was desperate so I paid him to install it. Do you think this was a reasonable diagnosis? If he did a reputable job, what life can I expect out of the booster? In other words should I be shopping for a new refrigerator now or a year from now or what? Thanks for your help!

If the unit seems okay now the booster should help it last as long as possible. He did you a favor as I know many techs just sell you a compressor overhaul in this case. At that point some customers say they don't want to get it repaired and then give the company the refrigerator. The company then puts a booster on it and resells it for $300 or so.

It's hard to say how long it will run now. I have seen compressors last up to 6 years and counting with one of these attached. When the compressor does go, why go shopping for a new fridge? If you get it overhauled right it would last for another 15 years and cost you 1/3 of the price of a new one. Just a suggestion.
