Frequently Asked Questions About Domestic Refrigerator Repair:
Compressor runs (only) for 3-5 minutes
Hi, I have some questions about my Kenmore 25 cubic ft refrigerator. I can plug it in and the compressor will kick on, the coils in the freezer section get cold. The compressor will run approx. 3-5 minutes and shut down, the fan in the freezer still runs. The compressor will stay off for 20-30 minutes and the process starts all over again. The temperature of the air blowing in the freezer when the compressor is on) is right at 60 degrees. Any idea what may be wrong?
Someone told me it was my compressor, but I don't tend to believe this as it kicks on and the cold get cold. The refrigerator uses R-12 and has a low side pressure reading of 118 when the compressor is not running. It us a general electric compressor. I have checked the defrost timer and it appears to be working correctly, as when I turn the timer knob, the refrigerator shuts down completely. I can turn it about 1/2 turn more and it kicks back on.
Any help you could give me to find my problem would be most appreciated.
Ooh, 3-5 minuets is bad. If it didn't start at all I would have to say maybe it's the starter. But since it does run for that length of time it must be drawing high running current. The overload is doing it's job as properly and cutting it out before windings start to melt and smoke inside the hermetic system which causes what we call an acid contaminated system. Sorry I have to confer with your previous advice.
