Frequently Asked Questions About Domestic Refrigerator Repair:

Compressor too hot

I've got a refrigerator that runs but doesn't cool and the compressor feels like it is burning up. Will your book or suggestions help me repair this or should I call a technician? Thanks for any help.

It's hard to say in this case. If the freezer is working even somewhat there is a good chance that it will help. One thing you've probably not noticed about compressors is that they do run very hot, in fact if you touch the top with your fingers you can only do so for a few seconds.

This is normal. The compressor usually has a thermal overload mounted right against it that will cut out if the case becomes too hot or draws too much current.
