Frequently Asked Questions About Domestic Refrigerator Repair:

Erratically cycles on and off

My fridge (Crosley GT19X8FA) keeps cycling on/off/on/off. It will run for about 2-4 minutes, then turn off for a minute, then run for a few minutes, then turn off......... The temperature of the food is as cold as it has ever been, yet the compressor won't stop cycling on and off. Sometimes when the fan/compressor are starting they hesitate -- kind of like the thermostat can't make up its mind to turn the compressor on or leave it off. The hesitation lasts for about 5 to 10 seconds then the compressor will either turn on, or stay off for about 10-20 seconds before turning on again. Additionally, when the startup hesitation occurs, there is somewhat of a soft buzzing sound coming from the Defroster timer. The coils and fan are clean from dust. The fridge was purchased new 7 years ago and has never been moved or re-located --which makes be think that my system does not have a Freon leak.

Any suggestions where I might begin as I begin replacing parts?

Sounds like you have a cold control problem. To test this theory jumper the two wires that go to the cold control together and see if the compressor runs constantly now. If it does then we are sure. My book does describe how to replace these but from the sounds of it you might want to get it done sooner than it takes to get this manual. Sometimes the book goes right through Canada US customs but other times it takes about 3 weeks. Sorry.
