Frequently Asked Questions About Domestic Refrigerator Repair:

Reconditioned refrigerator runs more now and dims the lights when it starts

My refrigerator has recently developed a couple of problems I think. It seems to be running more and more often than it was when I first bought it and when it does come on, it makes the lights dim in the kitchen. It also makes a loud vibrating noise when it first comes on. It seems to be cooling fine, as I have not seen anything not frozen or go bad, etc. I bought my refrigerator used about 2 years ago from a resale appliance shop. It is a White Westinghouse Frost Free freezer on top model. I have no idea how old it really is, maybe 5-10 or so. When I first bought it, I noticed my electric bill go up, but did not think anything of it. Any ideas?? Thanks so much!

There are two reasons for this situation. Perhaps the compressor was not new when you bought the unit and it is getting worn. To see if it was replaced take a look at the back of the unit and you should see a valve on one of the lines, if no valves are present then it is most likely original. If it was replaced perhaps the company got a bit of air in the system which is making it wear out prematurely. A good tech can solve this before it gets any worse.

The other possibility is that it may be the early signs of an automatic defrost problem. If this is the case the unit will work like it did before if you unplug it for 24 hours with the doors ajar. This will melt accumulated frost build up behind the back wall of the freezer section. Automatic defrost problems can be solved by most homeowners (or some mechanically inclined friend you get to help you).
