Frequently Asked Questions About Domestic Refrigerator Repair:

Replacing the original compressor starter

Your web site is very interesting. Having a knowledge of AC & R from my Navy days, my question is where does one find a compressor starter? Are they available at local stores? Sears, JC Penny's. I've never had to replace one before but I know what they look like.

You should be able to find one at an appliance parts supplier. Just to give you a background, when we find a need to replace one of these devices we usually install a universal product called a hard start pack. The cost of this device is usually about the same as an original component, but it has many advantages. The relay and overload are solid state but the main advantage is there is a capacitor involved that helps the compressor start "softer" and helps it live longer. You didn't mention where you are from but in Canada here the part number for a typical starter for a frost free would be RCO-410.
