Frequently Asked Questions About Domestic Refrigerator Repair:
Starter damaged by being placed in drip pan?
Hi, I hope you can help me. My Whirlpool fridge( a no frost model)keeps shutting itself off for approximately 12 hours at a time. I unplug it for about ten minutes and then plug it back in to hear the compressor try to start for about five seconds and then kick off. After about twelve hours it starts and runs for about two days. I looked at the compressor, it was very hot to the touch, and found the relay start capacitor laying in the dry drip pan. I think it may have been damaged from being in the drip pan. Should I spend $33.00 to replace this part or get another fridge?
Hmm, that's a good question. Surely the fridge is worth the $33 though?
You're right about the other thing, the capacitor is likely damaged from being immersed and from what you describe, that's exactly how a unit of your design will act when the start capacitor is not functioning.
