Frequently Asked Questions About Domestic Refrigerator Repair:

Unit cycles on its overload

I visited your web site and was wondering if I might ask you a brief question I had about my refrigerator problem. I've got an older unit made during the 70's. It's worked quite well up until now with very little maintenance. But now the motor seems to turn on and shut itself off after just several seconds. The motor then begins to turn on again several minutes later, and again shuts down after just a few seconds. It feels warm to the touch. I've just recently cleaned the coil on the bottom of the refrigerator (of course I realized I should have done that much sooner - it was filled with dust). Can you tell from this limited information whether this might be a problem worth trying to solve myself? I'm tempted to just buy a new refrigerator, since this one is so old. I'm sure if I have a serviceman repair it, it will cost a good fraction of what a new refrigerator would be. Thanks for any help you can provide

If this one has a fan at the back it should be running whenever the compressor tries to start. If not you may just need a new fan. Otherwise it could be just the starter or start capacitor on the compressor or in the worst case the compressor itself. To find this out you may have to get a service call on it. Depending on where you live it might be worth it for if it is only a part of the starter that is burnt out you may be able to get it done for less then $100. If it ends up being worse, then it will just cost a service call to find out. Hope this helps.
