Frequently Asked Questions About Domestic Refrigerator Repair:

Unit cycles on overload a few times then runs okay

Our Kenmore (Amana) side by side refrigerator/freezer is cooling OK (3degrees freezer and 40 degrees food compartment - I checked two consecutive days).

The problem is the compressor overload device clicks. It clicks twice in 1-2 seconds and then again 15-20 minutes later. The coils are very clean and the cold temperature control seems to work because it shuts the system down when I turn the temperature to its highest. The compressor feels pretty warm but not hot enough that it cannot be touched. Can you tell me what the problem is?

Two years ago sears replaced the compressor when the system quit cooling, not with an Amana compressor but with an after market unit made in Brazil. Thanks.

A capacitor installed between the start and run windings will solve this problem. If left as is you may have a starter failure as this situation can wear the relay or overload prematurely. There is a kit you can purchase that's easy to install if you want to run at it yourself. It replaces all the compressor’s original devices. Try part #RCO-410.
