Frequently Asked Questions About Domestic Refrigerator Repair:
Why is my refrigerator in the garage not working?
I’m having trouble with our 2nd fridge I put out in the garage. The fridge is freezing water and the freezer is not freezing our food.
The seal appears O.K., the vents in the freezer are clear the garage is as cold as the outside temp.
Is it because it's outside? I thought it was sealed. Can you give me any advice?
Thanking you in advance,
Calgary, Alberta, Canada
Hi,
Okay, if you're from Calgary and you have a refrigerator running in an unheated place, the compressor is likely not starting. There is a device you can make up to add to the unit so it will run. I'll attach the article that describes how to make up one of these, which is from the second edition of my book to this email.
Unfortunately it's more or less meant for freezers though. Why?
It's because if it becomes colder than a refrigerator outside, the refrigerator has no way of keeping the food inside the refrigerator section from not freezing.
I suppose though if this is a problem, I could come up with a device that would prevent the freezing but I would need your electrical schematic.
Anyway, here's the article that tells you how to make a device to keep a unit running in an unheated space.
Note: the article called Fitting a System to Run in an Unheated Space, and figure 5-35 was sent
