Frequently Asked Questions About Domestic Refrigerator Repair:

Frost caused by thermostat?

I have a Kenmore refrigerator and the freezer isn't getting cold enough to freeze. I'm getting a build up of ice on the evaporator on a frost free refrigerator. I shut it down and removed the chunk of ice thinking it was causing the problem, but the ice is building up again. Could this be a problem with the thermostat? Ice starts to freeze, but only after about six hours, and its not completely frozen. If you would have any advice I would appreciate it.

Sounds like you for sure have an automatic defrost problem and you have confirmed that the system is okay because when the frost is gone the unit works for a while. As far as just going ahead and replacing the thermostat, this is shot in the dark. It could be any number of about 4 things that can cause this to happen.

This is however something you could trace and repair yourself. Either my book or video will show you how to track down which component it is and then go about replacing it. If you're interested in getting a copy let me know.
