Frequently Asked Questions About Domestic Refrigerator Repair:
Frost free design will work well after I shut it down for 24 hrs. Why?
I own a 12-year old G.E. Medallion fridge/freezer. This is my problem: Until last Christmas, it ran trouble free. Christmas day, it decided to somehow slow down, temperature dropped in the fridge, and the freezer basically melted. At that moment, I had no choice, but to unplug, defrost for about 24 hrs, and then tried it again and it worked fine for about 2 more months. Then, this time only the freezer part acted up. Ice was melting, and this time, took no chance and did the same. It worked well since. I am concerned that this will repeat itself. What can I do to prevent and/or repair to avoid this issue. Can I do it myself?
Sounds to me like it’s very obvious you have an automatic defrost problem. The evaporator clogs with frost (up behind where you can’t see it) then air can’t circulate and consequently remove heat. This is why after you thaw it out then it's okay for a while until it clogs up again. Yes you probably can fix it yourself with the help of either my book or video, which you can review back on the web site.
