Doc, I have a sick Amana Model SZ22NW side by side refrigerator. The freezer will not get cold enough to freeze and will even evaporate the water from the ice cube trays(the ice maker is not hooked up). A week ago I pulled it out and cleaned the fuzz and dust from the coils they were quite bad. No luck. Then thinking the heater element may have died I unloaded what was left and pulled the inner panel to see if the freezer coils were iced over. There was a baseball sized chunk of ice on the upper right hand tube but not on the fins. The fins on the four corners of the coil assembly were deflected as if at one time ice had frozen on them pushing them a little out of shape. I left the cover panel off and an hour later the ice has begun to form on the curves of some of the other tubes. That brings me to the following questions:
1. Could the problem be the heater element. If so where is it located and how can I troubleshoot it and or replace it.
2. Could it be stuck on defrost cycle and again how can I troubleshoot that. I think the control box is located behind the kick panel.
