Frequently Asked Questions About Domestic Refrigerator Repair:

A tip about replacing seals, you might not need to

Hello. Could you please tell me how I go about purchasing a new seal for my 10 year old GE refrigerator? Mine is worn out and not sealing good anymore. Thank you.

If your gasket is not torn you don’t need a new one, you just need a door adjustment to make the gasket work. I say this because unless you’ve been using bleach to clean the original seal it shouldn’t have deteriorated in just 10 years.

Loosen the screws under the seal on all sides except the hinge side. Close the door and then without losing reference, tighten the two corners, recheck, tighten 4 more outward of the corners, recheck. Then once proper fit is established, tighten all the rest.

Otherwise you would order the seal from General Electric by your model number.

Thank you for writing back to me. I wonder if this will work in my case. The seal appears to be smashed in on the top outside corner (not the hinged side) of the gasket, like maybe it is old and no longer has any bounce left in it. Can you tell I know nothing about mechanics and refrigerators? Do you kind of understand what I am explaining and will adjusting the screws work for just this one corner? It would certainly save me a lot of money. Thanks!

On the affected corner roll up sheets of paper towel and place them under the gasket. No need to loosen bolts. Build it up until it seals. Pull and work up the magnetic part so it rests higher often, perhaps daily. After a month or so the material may be trained enough to remove the paper.
