Frequently Asked Questions About Domestic Refrigerator Repair:
Externally mounted door magnet
I saw today a couple of used refrigerators that had an extra magnet on the doors for when the gasket magnet weakens. How are they named and where can I get them ?
These are not for use when a magnetic seal weakens because it doesn’t. You probably just need to adjust your door so the magnet contacts all the way around.
I used many of them quite a few years ago but haven't seen them around lately. These were designed to solve problems with worn or broken latch hardware on refrigerators made before magnetic seals were available.
Many times you could no longer get a part for a latch or door handle on early designs, so the fix was installing an externally mounted magnet and disabling the mechanism.
One product name was.. Magna-Latch but they are likely getting rare.
