Frequently Asked Questions About Domestic Refrigerator Repair:
Getting a new seal for really old refrigerators?
We have an old GE refrigerator in our basement. The door seal is deteriorating rapidly and needs to be replaced. Do you know where I can find a new seal? It is probably thirty years old. 26" X 48" door. I thank you very much for your response.
General Electric is very good at keeping stock on their designs even after 30 years. Find your nearest GE parts depot and give them a call with your model number.
If not available, gaskets can be custom made for a nominal sum. You need the exact dimensions to the outside of the seal, accurate to 1/8th of an inch. Note if you have magnets under all sides (sometimes there is no magnet under the hinge side of the gasket). Also draw yourself a cross section diagram of the seal as there are a few different configurations.
Note: To replace the door gaskets on vintage designs that have rounded corners and no magnets, you can buy standard gasket by the foot.
