Frequently Asked Questions About Domestic Refrigerator Repair:

How to make a door easier to open?

I have a Sears fridge side by side, and the door seems to stick. It seems that it is being held shut by vacuum, I have cleaned the gaskets around the doors and sprayed silicone on the gasket. I have no clue as what could be wrong and the repairman that was here charged me for a service call and did nothing. Please help! my arms are not as strong as they once were and sometimes I feel like buying a new one.

I had an elderly client that had a similar problem on an upright deep freeze. I don't know if this will work in your situation but this is something you could do yourself. What helped in her case was to tape electrical tape overtop all along the length of the gasket, it's usually black but you can buy it in white as well if you're at all concerned with the aesthetics.

If I recall we left a small gap at the bottom so the vacuum wouldn't occur. This had the effect of making the magnets less strong and preventing the vacuum. If your door falls open after you do this you may have to jack the front legs up a bit so gravity will help the door stay where it should in
the closed position.
