Frequently Asked Questions About Domestic Refrigerator Repair:

Severely worn door, have to lift up to close

When I purchased my home back in August, I inherited a Hotpoint side by Side refrigerator freezer. The right hand door does not close unless you slide the whole door up about 2 inches and then it will shut. I believe it's the pivot sleeve(name?)at the base of the hinge section of the door that's broken. It's a Hotpoint No-Frost CSX20EH. Question: Are there spare parts out there to fix this problem? It's a good fridge that's working fine.

Sure, GE has always been great at providing parts for their products on units even up to 40 years old. Just contact your local parts store that has access to GE parts and microfiche info. Sometimes it may be just a worn insert sleeve but other times it could be the metal hole that holds the insert.

If you’re already having to lift up on the whole door it sounds like yours is quite worn though Phil. In this case you may need to replace the whole door, expensive and time consuming if you can even still get the part.

I have successfully repaired a number of these by taking the door right off, (careful there may be wires going in through the bottom hinge that feed the butter heater). Drill and screw on a piece of 1/8 x 1 flat iron all along the bottom on the door. Measure and drill a new hole in the flat iron where the hinge pin goes. Your measurements must be very precise to make this work. If you’re not up to this most good techs will be able to do this for you. Some are not open to this kind of repair so phone around first. This kind of job usually costs around $80.
