Frequently Asked Questions About Domestic Refrigerator Repair:
A JB welded puncture wound?
I punctured the evaporator line in my freezer box of a new 4.0 cubic mini fridge. It has (Haier, Chinese) 2.1 oz of R12 which escaped. I already tried to fix it with JB Weld but I guess it needs more R12?
Any way, I talked to one repair person (a 'bargain" repair person) and he insisted I junk it. I paid about 150$ for this fridge. Is it possible to fix it at all??? Will the JB Weld hold if so? Thanks for your time. I’m real frustrated about this!
From your email I can't tell where you are from. The laws vary from country to country though. In Canada here we can't patch leaks on aluminum components period. The component would have to be replaced costing way more then you paid for the refrigerator.
JB Weld would not hold the pressure for very long due to the amount of expansion and contraction that happens on the freezer box. If patches are in fact legal in whatever country you are from, technicians have access to products that do work for about 2 years or so but here again the cost may make it illogical to proceed with.
