Frequently Asked Questions About Domestic Refrigerator Repair:

Can I replace the R12 with R406?

Today I told my secretary to clean the ice build-up in my Sanyo (1.7 cu. ft.) SR-172 refrigerator. She ended up puncturing a hole in the ice box unit (aluminum) and a gas began leaking out. I unplugged the unit and assumed this gas was Freon but can't tell because the instruction don't tell me. Can I repair the puncture hole and refill the condenser with the R406 refrigerant? Where would I get this done in the Los Angeles area? Please help.

Patching holes in aluminum components seldom works for very long. For this reason this practice has been outlawed by the EPA in many jurisdictions. Yes R406 will work in an R12 system but you need special licenses for handling refrigerants such as R406. In most cases a repair such as this is not feasible on a unit as you described but you may want to check first with a local company. Sorry to give you the bad news.
