Frequently Asked Questions About Domestic Refrigerator Repair:

Can a known leaking system be topped up?

I have an old soda machine which holds bottles. My intention was to hold long necks in it, but now my girlfriend has informed me that my intention is to get rid of it. Unfortunately it is not making things cold. The person I bought it from conveniently neglected to tell me that it has a slow Freon leak and that since the laws changed, I can't just get someone to come out to the house to refill it. I'd like to get it running because I probably could get more money for it that way (and maybe almost break even).

My questions are: Can the Freon in this machine be replaced with R-13? And Is it possible for a regular guy to do so? If it is, do the instruction manuals you mentioned on your web site contain instructions for doing so? Thanks for your time and your help.

No, it needs to have R12 or one of the modern substitutes. Unfortunately though you won't be able to ad refrigerant yourself. With the new regulations you have to have a license and special equipment to purchase refrigerants. Your only course of action would be to hire a tech, have the leak repaired and the system recharged. This may make the repair illogical.

Where I live (Canada), if the hole is easy to find and on a copper or steel component the repair is about 120.00. If it's on an aluminum part the component itself has to be replaced which can make it quite expensive. Sorry to give you the grizzly details….
