Frequently Asked Questions About Domestic Refrigerator Repair:

Dishonest technician?

Noted symptoms -- freezer compartment only 26 degrees F; refrigerator compartment about 50 degrees F. Noted problem started after we had a momentary power outage.

Had technician check. It took literal 4 minutes before he diagnosed it as a compressor failure. He said there was a simple test for this and took out some of the food in the freezer and noted that a portion of the back wall had frost on it (the lower right wall of the freezer compartment). Well, that cost $60.

Is this a likely compressor problem. It's a Hotpoint 14 years old, but doesn't get much use (only 1 family member). What about a defrost unit problem or possible evaporator coils? Can a

compressor problem be diagnosed so simply?

If the frost is on just one part of the coils it would be a Freon leak and not the compressor, as this technician has told you. When the compressor fails there is little or no frost at all no matter what design you have. You need to find an honest technician that knows what he’s doing. Too bad about the $60.
