Frequently Asked Questions About Domestic Refrigerator Repair:
Does a hissing sound mean a leak?
My freezer has no automatic defrost mechanisms. Two days ago, it started having hissing sound (like there's a leak and also gassy smell). Is this a serious problem? Please explain it to me. Thank you very much.
If the freezer is still working it wouldn't be a Freon leak for if it leaked out fast enough for you hear it, it would be empty in a matter of minutes. If you listen closely to a running refrigerator you will hear a hissing sound. This is the sound that the circulating refrigerant makes when it boils. (R12 boils at about –21 F)
Freon leaks in refrigerators are usually terminal due to the economics of the repair to replacement costs. The refrigerant however is not toxic and doesn't pose a health risk. Hope this helps,
