Frequently Asked Questions About Domestic Refrigerator Repair:
Line was punctured installing a catch to hold door closed
I have a 1978 or so Sears Coldspot, and today I put a tiny puncture through the outside wall and heard a sinister hiss. Yep, I know what I did, and I am still in serious self recrimination about the stupidity that caused this.
But: can the tubing be repaired, soldered, sleeved, etc., and the system recharged?
It has been a faithful worker for years, but the door has started to sag, causing air leakage. It happened when I used a drill to put a catch hasp on the door to the side wall...... boy, do I feel stupid. Thanks.
Too bad you didn’t contact me about the door, I could have explained how to repair it before something like this happened.
Can the hole be repaired now? Yes since you hit the door post loop which is a high pressure line made of steel or copper it can be easily repaired. The door post loop is the high pressure refrigeration line run up under the strike plate on these designs to prevent the door gaskets from freezing due to condensation. It actually provides a source of heat at the gasket contact area.
In Canada, where I live this repair would cost about $80. The Coldspot depending on it’s age sometimes used a lot of Freon though so it may be slightly more. Whatever you do, don’t turn it on with the hole in the system until it’s repaired.
