Frequently Asked Questions About Domestic Refrigerator Repair:
Ran for 15 hours after a hole was punctured, need a repair?
I poked a hole in the freezer part of the fridge (Frigidaire, old model, freezer on top) when the hole initially was poked it made a hissing sound and a peculiar odor escaped. Approximately 15 hours after the incident the fridge has a very chemical like smell and the food in the top freezer is slightly cold, although is NOT FROZEN. Is there a danger of contamination to the food or the air we breathe, and is this flammable? Also, does the fridge have to be repaired?
Sorry to inform you but you have major problems with this unit now. When you turned it on after the hole was punched it sucks oxygen and moisture into the hermetic system. This situation is critical as the compressor is not designed to run in a normal oxygen atmosphere.
The windings smoke and the pungent odor you smell now is burnt refrigeration oil. I’ve smelled this odor many times before, as far as I know it’s not toxic but it does taint your food. No nothing will be flammable.
The frozen food may be staying cold from what we call thermal inertia. Because it was previously frozen you may be fooled into thinking that any cooling is coming from this unit at all. To repair this one the evaporator and compressor would have to be replaced and the system thoroughly cleaned of contaminants which would cost way more then the refrigerator is worth.
Sorry to give you such bad news, take care now.
