Frequently Asked Questions About Domestic Refrigerator Repair:
Refrigerator ran after it was punctured
You said to e-mail with questions, so here's one. I was defrosting out my fridge (I rent), scraping with a spoon and using pans of hot water. All of a sudden I heard a hissing sound, smelled an odor, the ice turned yellow in a spot, I now have an oily residue in my freezer, and my fridge and freezer aren't keeping anything cold, even on the coolest setting. My landlord says it's my fault, because there seems to be a couple of scratches on the wall where the (I'm guessing) leak is and says it's my fault. What could have caused it and can I fix it or get it fixed
After a refrigerator has run as yours has, with a leak large enough to hear and see refrigeration oil coming out of it, it's done.
What happens if it's turned on after a puncture wound occurs is the low side of the system, the freezer box part, runs a vacuum and sucks water into the system and pretty well ruins the compressor. I've managed to repair a few of these over the years but it's not really worth the effort.
Your refrigerator could have been repaired had you not turned it on again after you punched the hole. The metal on the freezer box is aluminum so it can be ruptured quite easily but I doubt if you could do it with a wooden spoon.
