Frequently Asked Questions About Domestic Refrigerator Repair:

Used a screw driver to defrost

I just could not wait for the refrigerator to defrost naturally, so I took a screw driver to the bottom of the freezer compartment to pry away the ice. It was not long and I heard that dreaded hissing sound. I punctured the compartment rather severely. It is a small unit about 3 feet high made by Tatung. I did not realize that that Freon ran through the metal freezer compartment. now I do!! My question for you is repair or discard? Thank you for your time and advice.

Sorry but it's likely terminal. We used to patch those, but only if they were very small. Now in Canada where I'm from, with the new environmental regulations we're prohibited. You may be able to in your state, I'm not sure, but my experience is that patches only hold for a limited time anyway. At any rate the job may cost you more then replacement cost. Hope this helps,
