Frequently Asked Questions About Domestic Refrigerator Repair:

Erratic sizes on cubes

Hello Fridgedr. I am do-it-yourselfer type: Have Kenmore ice maker unit:Ice cubes have a tendency to be normal size, not so normal size, smaller and then just not at all: Have noticed that the duration that the water solenoid valve stays onvaries:

Will work sometimes two (2) to three (3) weeks okay:

Then it will decide to do its own thing:

Have tried to adjust cube size by adjustment knob on icemaker with no success to my overall problem:

Unit is nine (9) years old: Unit is cleaned thoroughly at least once every year: Do you think I need to replace the solenoid valve?

I've come across this one a few times before and it always is the solenoid, so that's likely a good place to start. It seems they get sticky and don't open fully or not at all. The signal from the head works on time length and shouldn't vary unless you adjust the cube size.

Installed new solenoid valve last night:. Working correctly now. By the way, had to replace that valve five (5) years ago:

Perhaps your water supply has some sediment present, because it's unusual for these to fail after only 5 years. There are filters you can put on the supply line if this continues to be a problem.
