Frequently Asked Questions About Domestic Refrigerator Repair:
Repairing the ice maker solenoid
I have a Whirlpool side by side fridge with ice maker and water dispenser. The water got slower and slower. I took the hose off the back, turned the water on and the pressure was fine. Then I took the solenoid assembly apart to see if there was any debris inside (there was). I put it all back together, it was fine, but then I noticed that the water dispenser was dripping - took it apart again and noticed that there are two different sized washers inside (one thicker than the other), and both with dimples in them. I can't figure out which washer goes where and if the dimple should be out or in. Right now the water is down to a very slow trickle and there's no ice at all. :( Any help would be great! Thanks...
I know this may sound like more expensive advice than necessary, but what I would suggest is to install a new solenoid. Generally in appliance repair we seldom ever try to repair a part, for the most effective solution is always to install a new one. Once something goes wrong inside one of these devices you may save yourself a bit of money by taking it apart and cleaning it or whatever, but we often find, soon after something else will go wrong with it. Of course if you have a lot of time on your hands there is nothing at all wrong with what you are doing but to tell you the truth I can't help you with the internal details of this component because I've never taken one apart.
Note: this fix may have worked in this case had he only been really careful to observe which parts went where when he took it apart. This can be a general rule for whatever you take apart.
