Frequently Asked Questions About Domestic Refrigerator Repair:
Water out of dispenser won’t stop running
We have a 2 year old GE refrigerator. Today, for some unknown reason, water continually ran out of the water dispenser. Fortunately we were home and were able to turn off water value behind fridge. What is wrong and how do we fix or is it necessary to hire a professional?
Disconnect the wires off the top of the valve. If water still runs when you turn it on you need to replace the solenoid at the back where the water line hooks on. Sometimes sediment can get in these valves and can prevent them from closing. You could take the valve apart and clean it but in most cases you will then run into other problems so you’re best off replacing it. Imagine the amount of mess this could cause if it happened when you were not around?
If disconnecting the electrical on the top of the water valve did stop the problem, you likely have a bad micro switch in the door. It would be the one that activates when you press the lever to get water.
Neither of these are not too difficult to perform in any case. If it is your solenoid, while you’re at it check to see if there is a filter on the water line feeding the fridge. It’s unusual this would happen on one just 2 years old.
