Frequently Asked Questions About Domestic Refrigerator Repair:
Intermittent deep freeze
My deep freeze freezes then thaws. I think the compressor overheats. I've cleaned it. Any ideas?
You're right, it could be overheating but it could also be an intermittent device such as the cold control or start relay. Combination start relays are notorious for this. If your compressor has a terminal cover for a cubed-shaped device about 2" square then that's it for sure.
Other than that, long or light gauge extension cord?
If none of the above, to test to see if it’s the cold control you can short the two wires that go to it together. Don’t leave it this way for more then 8 hours but during this time check to see if it runs constantly. If it does, then the intermittence is likely coming from bad contacts in the cold control. If none of the above, then it likely is a worn out compressor.
My book or video you can review back on the web site can give you instructions on how to replace cold controls and start relays on deep freezers. Let me know what happens.
Thanks. It did have a cube type relay on the compressor. I got a new one and it works fine now.
