Frequently Asked Questions About Domestic Refrigerator Repair:

Heat leakage defrost operation clarification

I just bought a clean but presumably very old refrigerator. I have a question that you may be able to clarify for me.

The fridge is a hot point. The motor cuts off from time to time. I wonder if this is normal at all for fridges. In the lower compartment, there is some kind of element that has some frost on it. When the motor stops running, the frost can go away for some time before the motor decides to kick in. Is there some kind of bimetallic temp strip?

No, the cold control regulates this operation. This is called heat leakage defrost. What you are calling the element is actually called a humid plate, which is actually a part of the sealed system.

Will I have to defrost this one myself? . Any input would be greatly appreciated.

You have a semi automatic defrost refrigerator. I'll attach an article out of my book that explains how these ones work. You won’t have to defrost the lower section but every six months or so you will have to manually defrost the freezer compartment.

Note: Attached the Section 2 article called Two Cabinet Design
