Frequently Asked Questions About Domestic Refrigerator Repair:
Is a refrigerator more efficient when full?
I would like to know if a refrigerator is more efficient when it is full of food or when it is empty? Could you explain why it is or isn't?
To understand the answer to this question, we first need to resolve a common myth most of us have about the term cold.
We talk about cold so often that sometimes we tend to forget there is no such thing as cold, cold is only a relative term describing the absence of heat. There is such a thing as heat though, and for the last 100 years or so we have learned to make machines that can transfer it. Actually the prime purpose of all refrigeration equipment is to transfer heat from one place to another.
The common kitchen refrigerator works by transferring heat from the inside of the cabinet to the outside of the cabinet and into the air of your kitchen.
Now in the most basic of all domestic refrigerators, heat enters the inside of the cabinet in 3 different ways. By the food items that are placed in it, via the air that enters it when the door is opened, and by leakage through the cabinet itself.
As with any other machine though there is never anything produced for free. The same amount of heat needs to be transferred in your day to day use of the refrigerator whether the cabinet is empty or full.
There is one other factor though that does make a slight difference. When the cabinet is full compared to being empty, it has what we could call thermal inertia. This inertia will cause the refrigerator to run longer when it does run, and stay off longer between cycles.
So there is a slight advantage to the full fridge but it's only because the compressor motor doesn't have to start up as often. The start up of the motor from a dead stop uses slightly more electricity than the difference of the energy consumed between longer runs compared to shorter runs when the
cabinet is empty.
So in conclusion, the full refrigerator uses slightly less electricity only because of less frequent start-ups but the main advantage to a full refrigerator compared to an empty one is that the temperatures inside the cabinet are more stable.
