Frequently Asked Questions About Domestic Refrigerator Repair:

Mounting the compressor in another part of the house because of noise

Good Site & thanks for the info. I have a Kitchen Aid fridge that was sold to me as 'the quietest fridge available' and it is noisy as (*&^(^&%$!!. They claim it uses less energy, but it runs 50% of the time no matter how much you use it...... I have trouble believing them as my old GE fridge in the basement is about 20 years old, but runs real quiet and only about 10% of the time.

Why isn’t somebody making a fridge with a remote compressor (ie. the compressor could be in the basement or outside)?? When our fridge runs it "monopolizes the conversation" in the kitchen and when it shuts off it is like somebody just provided 'instant relief'!!. Could I get a fridge man to extend the lines and put the compressor somewhere else ?? Please advise. Thanks

Hi, It's true the new fridges are all really noisy compared with the older designs. My heart goes out to you as I hate noise too. I hear complaints about the new designs frequently. Mounting the compressor and condenser outside is complicated but it can be done quite easily in your basement. I've done a few over the years but it's quite expensive, $300 +. This is because the refrigerant charge to the system has to be recalculated and a new mounting bracket has to be custom fabricated. As well, part of the refrigerator’s electrical system has to follow the lines between the refrigerator and condenser unit.
