Frequently Asked Questions About Domestic Refrigerator Repair:

Preventing the defrost cycle from happening at specific times

I was wondering if I could prevent my frost free refrigerator from going through it’s automatic defrost cycle during peak electrical cost times. Ideally I don’t want it to defrost between noon and 6 PM

That's an interesting question. I suppose you could put the contacts of a standard universal electronic timer between the feed wire from the timer to your defrost circuit. Make sure the timer you use has contacts good for at least 600 watts. Then set the universal timer so the contacts are closed at all times except between noon to 6PM.

I wonder if you would save anything, though, as the fridge running with a missed defrost cycle may consume more energy then normal.

Thanks Clarence for your reply. After sending you the question I dug in and found the mechanical advance on the back of the defrost timer. It's one rev. for 24hrs . At 4 this afternoon I moved it 1/2 turn from closed contacts. That will turn it on at 4 am.

Hi, I think you are mistaken, most timers will cause a defrost cycle to happen every 6 hours. The full revolution will be every 6 hours not 24. Some timers are different though, these ones have two cycles that happen each full revolution. In these timers, one revolution will take 12 hours.
