Frequently Asked Questions About Domestic Refrigerator Repair:

Running a refrigerator in a closet, fire hazard?

Can you answer my question? We purchased a small refrigerator for our son for his college dorm. Instead of putting it where we recommended, he put it in the closet. He said he keeps it away from the wall and keeps the closet door open.

I am concerned about fire....what is your opinion on this? (The closet is made of wood).

As I know nothing about refrigerator safety, I would greatly appreciate your quickest response. Thanks

If the compressor's starter has never been replaced or the refrigerator’s wiring has never been tampered with you need not concern yourself about fire. The compressor has a thermal overload on it that will cut power to itself if overheating occurs causing food to thaw which will motivate your son to put the refrigerator in a different place or not to forget to keep the closet doors open.
