Frequently Asked Questions About Domestic Refrigerator Repair:

Submarine sounds

My refrigerator is making a sound that sounds like a submarine doing a deep dive. I believe it has something to do with the automatic defrosting. I moved the power saving control from conserving energy to reducing excess moisture and it has stopped for the time being. It is a ten year old Whirlpool: limited edition. Do you have a clue or should I seek other local professional help? Thanks.

I've heard the sound you describe before but it is very rare. It is possible the fault is with a hermetic device used on some models of the Whirlpool, Viking and Kenmore about the same age as yours which was supposed to help the system work with more energy efficiency. The device caused various problems sometimes causing noises and, in extreme cases, the unit not to work at all.

What it looks like is a cone shape about the size of a silver dollar with two pipes coming out of it placed right after the gas dryer. The warranty technicians and after warranty techs have merely been removing them from the hermetic circuit.

If your refrigerator doesn't have one of these, sometimes strange things can happen after the compressor gets a bit of wear. To correct the fault may not be worth the expense involved though.

You say the noise goes away when you switch the econo switch to humid setting. That may be coincidence. All that switch does is turn on a small heater under the metal piece in between the two doors.
