Frequently Asked Questions About Domestic Refrigerator Repair:
What number should I set my controls on?
Hello - I've been looking for something that would tell us where to set our controls. We just bought a 25 CF GE side-by side (discontinued floor model - made 6/98) with no instruction book. Can you tell me what numbers the controls should set at inside the refrigerator part? Thanks in advance
Buy 2 thermometers, ($2 each?). You can't go by the numbers on your dials as each fridge is different, and then there are differences varying environments and atmospheric pressures, depending where you live and your elevation. The numbers or letters on the controls are only a reference point. GE suggests, 0 to 10 degrees F for the Freezer and 35 to 40 degrees for the refrigerator section.
Most refrigerators have two controls One, called the cold control, will cycle the refrigerator on and off. The other one, the air damper, balances the difference in temperature between the two cabinets. Understanding this operation and which one is which will be a help.
Once you have the right temperatures in both cabinets these settings will not likely ever change, unless you move across the country, so you could mark them with a felt pen so you know the normal setting at a glance.
If you’re finding you’re having to adjust them at some future time, this would be an early warning that maybe you are experiencing a technical problem.
