Frequently Asked Questions About Domestic Refrigerator Repair:
Why is my Danby unit not cold enough?
Dear Fridge Dr., I found a link to your web site from "How Stuff Works" site. I have a
problem with my refrigerator and I think you may be able to help. I am a college student and have 6.4 cub. ft. DANBY Refrigerator. Just after Thanksgiving Break, it has stopped being cool even at the max. setting. It's cool but minimally. I have no idea what's going on. In the freezer I see water. I would think that at max. setting (at least) it should be frozen. Please help.
Danby refrigerators are of the Euro design. While North American refrigerators have our standard, fans, timers and elements, the Danby is what you could call a hermetic system with a control like a deep freeze.
Did you turn it off during Thanksgiving break? Since these designs are built with embedded components they are subject to the same problems as chest type deep freezers. See:
Sent link to the Section 1 article "Deep Freezers".
So sorry to give you the bad news but usually when you have a problem such as you describe, the situation is fatal. What usually happens in my experience is that the Freon lines rust out in between the two walls and leak. As far as I know there is no way of repairing it. Sorry.
