Frequently Asked Questions About Domestic Refrigerator Repair:
Amana, freezer on bottom design gets ice on the floor
Got your address from your web page. It looked good -- but I need more specific info...
Have an Amana refrigerator with a freezer on the bottom. The freezer does NOT have an icemaker -- but it's acting like it does! The bottom basket keeps freezing to the bottom because of a large amount of ice buildup. It's clear water that builds up on the very bottom of the freezer. When I defrost it, three days it's back.
We replaced the seal around the freezer door ourselves, thinking that that was the problem. It hasn't helped. The ice just keeps building up in the bottom of the freezer.
Is the refrigerator slowing dying? Is there anything else we can do before calling the repairman? Thanks for your help!
It sounds to me like you simply have a plugged defrost drain. Since the water ends up on the floor of the freezer on this design it turns to ice. Too bad you went through all the expense and haste of replacing the door seal.
Your refrigerator goes through an automatic defrost cycle 2 to 4 times a day. During this time the water that results should be routed to a place near the compressor where it is evaporated during the run cycle. If one of the fittings or a drain tube is clogged, the water that results from the defrost cycle spills into the freezer compartment and subsequently freezes.
