Frequently Asked Questions About Domestic Refrigerator Repair:
Ice in the drain trough
Clarence: Love your site! Just wondering if you could help me trouble-shoot my problem. My fridge is freezing up. I've pulled the panels off the freezer 4 or 5 times to thaw the evaporator drain. This last time the evaporator was a block of ice. I "hot-wired" the defrost wire to 115V with an extension cord & it got hot, so I think it's o.k., I replaced the bi-metal, but don't think it's the problem. I'm an auto-tech, not a fridgedoc but think I can handle the repair with the right help. I have no schematic so I have no idea as to where timers, relays, etc. are, so what do you think? can you help me?
Is it ice or frost? There is a big difference to this when you want to solve this problem. If ice, your defrost circuit and components are likely okay but your refrigerator may have a burnt out drain trough heater. Check your wiring diagram to see if yours has one. The drain trough heater, if present, is a low wattage foil heater to keep your drain trough from freezing over during the automatic defrost cycle.
If your design doesn't have a heater and you have ice backing up, chances are the drain fittings or tubes leading to the condensation evaporator tray are clogged somewhere.
