Frequently Asked Questions About Domestic Refrigerator Repair:

Older Westinghouse water problem

Hi. Our fridge is old but I would like to repair it. Westinghouse Monaco RT146PRW, serial # 742224.The problem is water drains down and collects on bottom basin right under the crisper as it has to be mopped out every day. The colder temperature fan cooling fan unit in lower area in fridge drip's. Also tray underneath fridge is dry and the drain hose is dry. Do you have any answers or suggestions.

The problem is not too serious. The drain tube is plugged up which often happens on this design.

If it's the one I'm thinking of, the tube is not visible down the back of the refrigerator.

First you have to remove the cover from the compressor enclosure.

Second, reach in and pull out the pipe that runs from roughly the top center of the enclosure to over the tray. The end of the pipe is held in place by a bracket that you can pull the line back through. Flex the tube back out of the enclosure.

Third, pry the drain cup off at the other end. This is the white fitting at top, back and center of the refrigerator compartment.

Now you just have to get this line clear. One obstacle in the way is often an ice plug at the top. To melt use gas line antifreeze full strength or a hand held hair dryer at the orifice. A turkey baster with hot water may come in handy also. Blow on the tube upward until you blow all debris out. Sometimes if it’s really plugged you may have to force a wire or fish tape to clear it.
