Frequently Asked Questions About Domestic Refrigerator Repair:
Water leaked back because unit wasn’t level
We just acquired a nice 2 year old Maytag side-by-side model RSD2400DAE. We have an old house so, at first, the installation wasn't quite level but tipped back slightly. We've fixed that, but in the meantime, incoming water meant to fill the automatic ice-making tray streamed into the bottom of the freezer, froze solid, and even went through the rear vent from the freezer compartment into the "guts" of the fridge. Now neither fridge or freezer is working and we're not sure if we've done permanent damage....advice?
The water that spilled into the works should have gone down the drain at the back at the bottom of the freezer section no matter where it came from. So you likely need to clean out the drain hole. If the ice there is preventing air flow then this is likely the cause for the unit not being cold enough. Turn of the fridge, melt down the ice with a hand held hair dryer, and poke a flexible tube or wire down the hole to clear it out.
If the ice is causing no restriction to air flow then you have another problem, perhaps one with the automatic defrost circuit. I think this because, when there is a defrost circuit problem the unit works okay for a while then when enough frost accumulates the unit loses it’s ability to cool.
