Frequently Asked Questions About Domestic Refrigerator Repair:
134a system moved and stored, now not working
A friend of mine has a whirlpool fridge and it is fairly new. They have it sitting in there garage right now have not had it running for the last nine months. They plugged it back in and it sounds like is running but it will not get cold. I took a look at for them to make sure the compressor, compressor fan, and coil fan are all fine and running and they are. What could the possible problem be? Does the R134a refrigerant get solid or something? Please help. they don't have a lot of money to spend on expensive repairs.
No, actually 134a doesn't coagulate but if, as you say, everything runs and it won't work chances are the refrigerant has leaked out. Perhaps a line was ruptured when it was moved, or it has a factory leak. If the latter is the case the repair should be covered on warrantee as Whirlpool has a 10 year warranty on the sealed system.
Another thing that may have happened is the oil has plugged the capillary line. We’re finding this happens quite often on 134a systems as the oil used is quite different than in an R12 system. Besides checking the things that you already have, there is not too much you can do for them in this case. This one will need a system repair.
