Frequently Asked Questions About Domestic Refrigerator Repair:
Refrigerator has sat for 10 years
I have a refrigerator that has been sitting for ten years. It is a G.E. Americana. The problem is that the food side doesn't become cold and the freezer side doesn't freeze. The freezer side gets as cold as the food side normally would. I can store food in the freezer side. It was operating perfectly before it was put into storage. The rubber seals around the door appear to be in good condition and don't seem to be leaking. Any recommendations as to how I should approach this problem. Repair costs versus new unit? Thanking you in advance,
10 years? hey that's a long time. If the fan in the freezer still runs and the unit has been plugged in for over a week perhaps the timer dried up and stopped. In this case you would have had it working okay for a while at first, then noticed these symptoms.
If it didn’t work okay at first and the fans do in fact work, it may be that either the Freon has leaked( rusted out lines) or the compressor valves can get rust deposits on them. If the latter, the rust may wear off soon and the system will improve.
After a ten year period it would have been best to let it run the first time for about 10 minutes then let it sit for a few hours. Next, run about an hour, then let it sit again. After that you could have let it run.
That compressor would have been dry as a bone when you first started it up. I always recommend running them for a day or two every year of storage.
