Frequently Asked Questions About Domestic Refrigerator Repair:
Refrigerator not turned on for over 18 years
I have a Kenmore that has bee sitting idle since about 1982. I purchased it brand new at the time. I used it for about 1 year then had a stroke of bad luck. It has been sitting in a vacant house that I own since that time.
I now am about to move into the house, I recently had the electricity turned on. when I plugged in the refrigerator it was dead as a doornail.
Let me know how much your manual is so that I may purchase it and see if I can repair this device. Thank You..
Sitting for 18 years, that’s a long time for a refrigerator. However, you may not need this book. If the interior light comes on when you open the door but nothing else runs, leave it plugged in for more then 20 minutes. It may be just on the defrost cycle. If you have to wait longer then this for it to start, your defrost timer may no longer be running and you might have to advance it manually. Let me know if you don’t know how to do this.
Once it fires up though, only let it run for 2 minutes or so because that compressor is going to be as dry as a bone. Leave it sit for an hour or two then let it run for 15 minutes, wait again and let it go for an hour. After the next wait, then you can let it run. What you are doing by this is lubricating the compressor.
I’ve heard of many cases where a refrigerator stored even for 4 years burns out within a week if left to run for a full initial cycle, which can take up to 6 hours from room temperature to control satisfaction.
It’s always recommended to let a stored refrigerator run a day or two every year.
