Frequently Asked Questions About Domestic Refrigerator Repair:

Fridge makes a noise like a smoke detector with a low battery

Hi! A few days ago our fridge starting making a periodic chirping noise. To give you an idea on how it sounds, we initially thought it was the smoke alarm telling us it needed a new battery. After changing the battery in the smoke detector, we realized it was coming from the fridge. It's a large GE fridge that we bought used 3 years ago from the previous renters, so I'm not quite sure how old it is. It never made this noise before. If you could give us any ideas on how to fix it, we'd be greatly appreciative. It's slowly driving our dog crazy! :) Thanks for your time.

Noises like these come from either a fan motor or the defrost timer. But most likely the defrost timer. When a fan motor wears out the noise is a more constant squeal or growl. When the noise happens you have to get right down and find specifically where it's coming from. Replacing either of these components is not too difficult.
