Frequently Asked Questions About Domestic Refrigerator Repair:

Loud squelch sound goes away if turn fridge off, then can return in 2 hrs or days

Our 16 year old Kenmore has started to occasionally give out an alarm that really gets your blood pumping in the middle of the night.

To stop the noise I have to turn the cool button below the current temperature. The squealing always stops right away. Then I turn the cool button back up and it seems to run okay for anywhere between 2 hours and 2 or 3 days.

As I said, this is an old Kenmore, should I attempt to fix it or look for a new one? Thanks for your reply

I've heard that one before and it comes from the fan motor. You just need to install a new one. On Kenmores these can vary in price from one to the other though. Ball park from $30 to $50 When it’s happening see if it becomes louder when you open the freezer door. If it does then it’s the evaporator fan motor, if not, it’s likely the condenser cooling fan in the compressor enclosure. Hope this helps,
