Frequently Asked Questions About Domestic Refrigerator Repair:
Stopped dead, the light comes on but nothing else
My refrigerator does not run. I am getting power to it but not to the compressor, fan or any other part. I have measured the voltage at a little black connector box (not sure what this is). I believe there must be a bad switch somewhere. Can you help. I have a Whirlpool Automatic Defrost and I am in the US. The refrigerator is about 15 years old. Thanks,
It could be possible that it is stuck on the defrost cycle. On the black box you speak of there should be a manual advance slot, a place where you can turn it with a screw driver or coin. Move the slot until you hear a click then try plugging in the unit again. If it runs now you should get that sticking device called the timer replaced with a new one.
The other most common cause for this is the cold control, to test it:
Unplug the refrigerator, remove the control from its mounting spot. The cold control will be under the device you originally could turn the refrigerator off with when it was running. Connect the two terminals that went to it together. Making sure nothing will short plug in the refrigerator. If it starts and runs like this then the cold control has burnt out contacts.
