Frequently Asked Questions About Domestic Refrigerator Repair:

Stopped working and getting shocks now

Dear Sir: Yesterday, our ref just stopped cooling. It has a working voltage of 110 volts. The light inside still comes on, but there is no coolness at the freezer portion. The fan at the freezer part does not come on. I have opened the back part, where the wires connect to the condenser fan and the compressor. I have also opened the metal case that covers the freezer fan and evaporator unit. I have checked the wires and tested the voltage that should go to the condenser fan. There is no voltage output. The fan itself and the compressor motor does not run. What could be the problem? BTW, we also get electrocuted every time we touch the metal parts. Thank you very much.

You should perhaps call a technician on this. I’m concerned about the shocks. In this case you may have a wire touching part of the hermetic system and once the unit is grounded it may blow a hole through, which would be a very expensive repair compared to the simple electrical problem that you now have. Someone now should trace the ground fault without the unit energized, which takes a bit of inside knowledge about electrical systems.

As always, if you are getting shocks at any time you should insure your appliance is properly grounded, then if the appliance blows the breaker you will know you have a wiring problem.

Normally in this situation I would say, either your control is faulty or the defrost timer is stuck on the defrost cycle.

Note: It seems this customer may have crossed some wires here and shorted something to ground.
